Week 3 Wrap Up

I didn’t get to post on Friday or Saturday, two fun-filled days, so I figured I’d just do my wrap up and bring those into the fold.

Friday after a crazy/hectic day at work, I was able to connect with fellow coach friends at another driveway beers ‘session’. Knowing full well that I needed to run the final 5k of the running program in the morning (more on that in a bit), I didn’t want to put myself in a bad start by going overboard. That being said it is always a good time gathering with the current football coaching staff at River Falls HS – something you don’t always get with the entire coaching staff and I am truly excited for whatever football looks like in the upcoming season. I did let the guard down a little bit while hanging out and indulged in my first ‘bun(s)’ since starting the OPTAVIA program – was it worth it? I don’t know, sure tasted good. Will it kill me? No. Did I feel like I let everyone and everything down? Not really. Was I mindful and aware of what I was doing at the time? Absolutely and I think that’s the important thing here. Do we like these immediately answered questions? Probably not.

Now Saturday was a blast – woke up to a beautiful morning. Plans were to run the 5k today – the final step of the last 11 weeks and this fat@$$ to 5k running program. I had to get the run in early, because we had plans for the rest of the day. I grabbed the next t-shirt out of the drawer, just so happened to be a Large shirt, not an XL shirt, of which I have a very limited few – and it fit without the belly hanging below the bottom or sticking out. The ‘personal 5k race’ was completed. I felt great, my pace was consistent, my feet didn’t hurt nor did things lock up crazily as they would on a typical day of running (OCRs in the past), I ran the whole thing and finished in 28:43. Just a week ago, when I ran the 3.5 mile day, the 5k time was 31 and change and I felt meh afterwards. After that run, I felt great and walked back with pep in my step!

The family went to the in-laws’ house for lunch and a small gathering – kids played, we ate and chatted outside. The lunch was BBQ chicken with the sides available – potato salad, deviled eggs and the orange whip salad thing… not a ‘green’ to be seen. Again, I didn’t freak out, but ate in moderation. This was to be the ‘& 1’ meal of the day. I even indulged and had a rhubarb crisp/bar for dessert. After my successful run, I felt I deserved a little treat. We shall see how things work out tomorrow during weigh-in.

My dad had offered to take the boys and me fishing and we worked it out where he would pick us up after lunch time to get out on his boat – which he, Jonathan and I did. Joseph didn’t feel like fishing yesterday, so he stayed back with Katie. As for the fishing trip, it started out a little slow, but we found a spot that turned out quite fruitful. We fished until dusk and brought home a mess of 14 panfish and 1 perch. A number of the panfish were some nice, big ole slappers too! So we got ourselves enough for another fish-fry in the not-so-distant future. Came home and cleaned the fish with my dad and as I fell asleep, smiled at a tremendously wonderful day.

I realize not everyone is having these tremendously wonderful days as things are absolutely insane right across the border in Minneapolis. I do not have a horse in this race, but I empathize with those involved. What is going on now, however, has nothing to do with the initial cause and is quite honestly causing more harm to that cause than any good. I try to treat everyone the same, with love and respect – realizing even I fail from time to time – but that is always my goal.

Saturday’s Fuelings:
0855: Wild Strawberry Shake
1110: Berry Crunchy Os
1414: Meal – BBQ Chicken, potato salad
1705: Drizzled Chocolage Fudge Bar
2010: Cranberry Honey Nut Granola Bar
2235: Decadent Chocolate Brownie
H2O: ~15c

Since my fat@$$ to 5k program is done, I decided to up the ante and take things to the next level… until I’m able to get back to lifting, I might as well do something constructive so I’ve started the 10k running program today – starting with the benchmark 5min run. The nice, short 5min excursion was sufficient on this, a warm spring/summer type day.

I now have most of the garden planted (still need some zucchini), checked out the camper for a trip in a couple weeks – all appears to be in good condition. Now just to review what we need and what is that erroneous fluff that really isn’t necessary for a weekend camping! Heck, we might even pack before the day we leave, that’d be a first! The fact that all of this is queued up and being started on now (2 weeks in advance) is really a tell-tale sign that we are definitely not upon a normal scenario.

Today’s Fuelings:
0930: Cinnamon Cream Cheese Swirl Cake
1245: Raisin Oat Cinnamon Crisp (bar)
1450: Honey Sweet Potatoes
1625: Caramel Delight Crisp (bar)
1940: Meal – Meatloaf (8.5oz) and steamed veggies
2230: Dark Chocolate Cherry Shake
H2O: ~12c

On to tomorrow, a new week and another weigh-in. After this weekend’s beautiful weather and the things that were done, hopefully, tomorrow is not a let down. Hey, it’ll already be June!
