Sometimes I worry about myself and sometimes, it’s very easy for me to justify what I put myself through. Yesterday, the CrossFit workout was quick (well, not so much for me as my endurance is about as existent as the Dodo bird) and very painful. I definitely felt that one in my hamstrings today as I awoke. Of course, this could be partly due to me having to sleep in my son’s bed, since he was snoring in my bed when I got home from my bi-weekly bench press and back lift with some friends last night… but I digress.

Today, I was able to rope a co-worker into the workout and I think he’s secretly as deranged as I am. Andrew and I stopped in to CrossFit White Bear for today’s free workout. Oh and how much fun</sarcasm>, it was… actually, I love these workouts because they are exactly what I need.

Today’s Free WoD

500 M Row
then
Three Rounds of
10 Ring Rows
20 Walking Lunge (alternating legs)
30 Sit Ups

My Results

12:43

Now, I could blame yesterday’s results on the first early morning workout in quite a while. Today, the 7:00am class wasn’t available, so the 11:00am was the time for me and the early morning wasn’t a valid excuse. hmmmm, what else could I blame it on?? I’m sure I’ll think of something. Here I sit at the computer, my hamstrings are locking up and I feel an increasing amount of soreness oozing through my body… I thought I was a tough guy, so I started doing the walking lunges with a 45# plate overhead – I even did that same 45# plate on the second round. The third round, however, I thought my arms were going to fall off after the ring rows, so I just went body weight (which didn’t seem all that much easier, for some reason).

This was my first time playing with a row machine… wow! Thanks, Jaco, for starting off the workout with something that seemed to be pretty easy and turned out to totally wipe me out for the rest of it! And I actually mean that sincerely. Now, I will need to make sure to do some stretching tonight (as well as drink plenty of water!) as the final free workout will be tomorrow and I’m definitely not going to miss out on another opportunity to kick my own @$$!

i continue to make progress – the number of pull ups are increasing and the lunges were a little better today. towards the end of the video, i was pretty spent and had to pause it for a little bit to catch my breath and mentally prepare for the last few exercises. feels good to be completely wiped out at the end of the workout. i’m not running into the muscle soreness like i was the first week, so that’s good. tomorrow Kenpo X – no Warrior Dash, so i’ll get that workout in

i still need to focus more on my diet – i keep going back and forth on attempting a Paleo diet. what i’m ultimately looking to find is a Paleo diet on a budget, both cost and time as fresh veggies, fruits & meats aren’t cheap or easy to prepare. any suggestions or a place for me to focus my search?

i feel like i cheated today and in many ways, i did. haven’t been feeling the greatest the last couple of days, so last night i took a lil bit of night time cold medicine. well, that made this morning slow and groggy. a late start on a longer Yoga X workout is not a good thing. i did push play but because i still wasn’t feeling the greatest, i skipped (read: fast forwarded) the majority of the workout. basically did the yoga belly 7 and post-workout stretching. seems perhaps there’s a bug floating around the house (joseph has a NASTY case of hives possibly caused by whatever has been affecting my level of activity).

a good nights rest and we’re back at it tomorrow.

it’s been quiet, i know – yesterday, i woke and got the video started, which was a feat on its own. started the warm up and started hacking my lungs out. decided to listen to my body and give the plyo workout a rest – so i went back to bed for the hour and woke up feeling much better. this morning, i debated whether to do the plyo workout or to just skip it and move on (as i did with the Insanity workouts earlier). and the fact that it was the plyo workout and i was still recovering, to some degree, from warrior dash… we went ahead and did shoulders and arms today. got through it, and made progress… but it wasn’t easy.

you might’ve noticed that it’s been a couple days since a p90x post… this is because on saturday (supposed to be day 13 and Kenpo X), i did Warrior Dash. it was super fun times, very dirty, i got way too much sun (paying for that today) and i’m still recovering to some degree today! my time on the 3.02 mile course (up hill most of the way it felt), was 43:42.05 which was good enough for 3,529th place on the day and 562nd in my age/gender group. photos haven’t been posted on the website, yet – but i think i made Team Slobbermonkey proud! if anyone has a chance to do it, i would jump at that in a heartbeat, it’s a blast! with that being said, i took yesterday and utilized the rest day, even though X Stretch probably would’ve been a good idea, not moving seemed like just as good an idea (actually better)!

today was back to the nitty gritty of P90X and round 3 of Chest & Back. the weight was down this morning about 3 lbs (that’s 10% of what i was hoping to lose). every one of the exercises is going up – all pull up variations are increasing about 1 rep every week, all push up variations 2-5 reps. it’s pretty cool to see the progress and in two weeks we start another phase, which will be wonderfully taxing in a whole new way. not really looking forward to tomorrow’s workout, hopefully the legs will be back a little bit more – still wiped from WD.

pushed play again this morning! outside of the work related trip (and subsequent recovery from said trip), i haven’t missed a day of workouts. still struggling with the eating part – primarily portion sizes and snacks – but i think i’m making progress. my knee is still quite buggy, so i am not able to get down on lunges as far as i probably should. but when i hear the clicking when i do lunge, i have a tendency to adjust. the left leg feels good, so i’m able to go deeper. and there are a lot of lunges in this workout. still struggling with the pull ups, however, my numbers are increasing – not the 15-20 range that they’re doin on the videos – but progress is being made. imagine the leaps i would make when i really start to focus on the diet and actually shed some of this ‘baby fat’ (that’s the weight i gained from the the two pregnancies that i still haven’t lost yet).

Warrior Dash tomorrow, but not until Kenpo X is done – i should’ve started P90X a lot sooner as a preparation for WD… oh well, i’ve always been good at procrastination, why stop now?

this was the first yoga workout i did in the morning (if you recall the first week, it was an afternoon session while the boys were sleeping). morning yoga is different than afternoon yoga, but both are not exactly easy for me. also, for some reason, i had mentally prepared for Kenpo X and not Yoga X. it still amazes me how much i sweat during the Yoga X workout. the tip of the day “remember to breathe” gets difficult at times especially during the plow stands. and i still sit high on the warrior 1-2-reverse portion of the workout. with the possible stress fracture in the foot the warrior 3 and half-moon stuff was quite difficult when on the left side, but i was able to keep the other foot up the entire time on the right (albeit a bit wobbly).

continuing to push play…

it was not easy, this morning, to drag myself out of bed… but i did and i pushed play. And, like always, i felt better once i started warming up and felt great when it was all done – physically and mentally drained, but in a good way.

what a difference having heavier weights available makes! my left pectoral muscle has developed a little fasciculation all day (which is distracting because i like watching muscles twitch – a little known fact). obviously, i wasn’t able to do as many reps with the heavier weight – but i’m feeling it more than the first week. which is super awesome!

i still need to work on my diet – i’m not following the nutrition guide – i don’t have the time right now to get all “Simonis-y” on it. but i am conscience of it – that’s a start is it not? wondering if the shakeology is something i could/should get into or should i just keep using my own shakes for AM meal replacement and work on bettering the meals and snacks throughout the day. i’m open to suggestions.

with the recent heatwave and humidity, one would come to expect a little sweat to flow from the brow on occasion. this morning (like most mornings when working out), the flowing fluids were on hyper-drive today. the plyometric workout, a lot of jumping, bouncing and squatting, has never really been my favorite workout. after years of pounding through training and football, my knees bother me – especially on the lunge and squat exercises – and i think i might have a stress fracture on the bottom of my left foot. but i do my best and forget the rest! no excuses

still don’t have a heart rate monitor, but i’m pretty sure i was in the zone for the majority of the 58 minute workout. i did lose focus towards the end a little bit, but i did finish in a heap of sweat. joseph woke up as i finished and he asked me what was wrong because i was all icky. i had to giggle at that. i’ve been giving him a little bit of my smoothie every morning – he really likes the little fruit and protein shake that i stir up, yay!

tomorrow, shoulders & arms
