we’ve hit double digits in days i’ve been doing insanity and this is the third time i’ve done the Ploy Cardio Circuit. it still kicks my @$$, but i continue to notice small things that are getting better in the routines and exercises. i’ve said nothing but good things about Insanity since i’ve started and today i will mention a few things i do not like (in no particular order):

no calf stretches – you do a lot of jumping and running in place, and my calves basically deadlock at times, and there is no point in which you stretch the calves or achilles

missed stretch – in this DVD, the pre-workout skips a left hamstring stretch. a minor oversight, but something i don’t care for

same warmup for most of the DVDs – at least so far, there was one variation. i’d like to get more variety in not only the warmups but the workouts as well (but it’s only day 10 and there are more DVDs in the package)

i hate mountain climbers and mummy kicks – and that’s probably why i should be doing them

outside of the first one, the others are nit-picky and don’t carry too much weight – moral of the story, i’m pretty much diggin the insanity workouts. this is the first time i’ve consistently done a workout program like this, i’ve started p90x and 10minute trainer (borrowed from the brother-in-law), but those i attempted in my living room and i just couldn’t do it. but now i’m running over to the <a href='http://www.tshealthandwellness.com target='new'>fitness center and doing the workouts in the back room (we’ve got a DVD player setup back there with some step exercise videos for our members). and 10 days into it i still wake up early to “git er done”. nice!

on a positive note, i did the entire warm up without stopping for the first time since starting this crazy@$$ workout program. again, i was trying to keep good form, so speed did suffer a bit – but i never stopped moving, which is a step in the right direction. i even got a compliment from the wife that the arms are looking more defined (i think she might’ve just been buttering me up to do some housework). until tomorrow, when the fun continues…

yesterday was nice. i like me some rest days (as long as there aren’t too many), but this morning, the work started right back up. today was the video i wasn’t able to finish on day 3 due to the stupid DVD player – and boy did i miss a tough one.i’m not sure if my aerobic systems are getting better or what, but today the breathing wasn’t as heavy. maybe it was the fact that this video incorporated more anaerobic exercises, which wiped me out and i wasn’t able to move as fast to get the aerobic work in.

regardless, i am noticing that the triangle poses during the warmup stretching routines are getting easier (they call that progress in most countries). i refuse to step on the scale until, well, next week when we do another fit test. that will be the true test answering the question: ‘does insanity work?’ in other news, while i am constantly hungry during the day, i’ve been able to eat in moderation for the most part. i know that was always my biggest problem, i like to eat and when i has food in front of me that tastes good – i’ll eat a lot of it. moderation, hmmm, where have i heard that before

as if there wasn’t a scarier phrase in the english language than “pure cardio”… i decided to add to the intense amount of pain i was about to go through with some red skin in the form of sunburn. yeah, i know it’s bad for your skin and it’s the leading cause of skin cancer – but i went to the twins game yesterday afternoon. i’ve never had to worry about the sun at twins games before. so my knees, arms and face is a little red and sore. more about the game later…

once the DVD was inserted and we started the warmup, i didn’t notice the sunburn until the end stretching… probably because i was too busy dying! (in a good way of course). When Shawn T starts off the workout by stating that he isn’t looking forward to a workout, T don’t be looking forward to the workout either – x100. i’ve decided to incorporate a mini goal throughout this program – to not stop doing the exercises at all through an entire workout. sometimes, i just gotta stop. but being able to continue to do the exercises (maybe not with the same intensity or speed) will give the cardio/aerobic systems a hefty and healthy boost. on the bright side:

last night i went to bed right after joseph went down because my left cheek felt like i’d taken a direct shot to the face with a mike tyson punch. this morning, i woke up and the pressure was still there – a sinus pressure thing, methinks (i dunno, this hasn’t ever happened to me before).

i contemplated just taking the day off, but then i thought to myself WWSTD (what would Shaun T Do)? so i sucked it up and got my @$$ out of bed and over to the fitness center. yesterday, i got a new DVD player – one that doesn’t suck and actually works, so i had to set it up. and popped in the Cardio Recovery DVD. i’m not sure this was a good thing or not. it was definitely less strenuous and less jumping (my calves thank you), but it was deep stretching and flexibility work that, well, let’s just say: I SUCK AT. don’t get me wrong, i love me some yoga, i’m just not good at it (unless you’re talking about the child’s pose, that i rock at!). my legs were shaking and quivering almost the entire time. so little movement, yet i was still drippings with sweat, so sad. all in all, i’m glad i got the workout in, i feel better about myself and:

So it was quite difficult to get up this morning… the bed was so comfy and the legs were so sore. but i managed to get out of bed somehow and get over to the fitness center. popped in the Insanity disk for the day and started – a new warm up routine caught me off guard, but i quickly adjusted… then about halfway through the first round of the actual workout, the video started skipping. i stopped it and checked the disk – looked fine. so i put it back in and it would not load, WTH! tried some other DVDs, same thing. turns out this is a common problem with the GPX DVD Player (it was a cheap $20-$25 player the rents picked up for the fitness center). i might have to stop somewheres to get a different cheap-o DVD player, cuz this has happened before. i guess we got the wrong cheap DVD player.

well, by the time i finally gave up on getting the DVD player to work (now), it’s too late for me to get the workout in today, as i gotta get to work. maybe this is God’s way of saying “dude, you’re sore, relax a bit today” – at least, that’s how i’m going to take this.

i’ll get this workout in down the road a couple times, but man, i’m irked that i’m missing a workout.

so i finished the 100 pushup challenge last week for the second time (last year and this year). final tweet included “what do i write about now?” after 100 posts of the challenge – and plenty of flack and feedback from my friends – it’s time for a new challenge. and today i begun the new challenge: Insanity!

From the company that brought you P90x, Beachbody, I will try the Insanity workouts. This morning i kicked it off with the fit test, and well, the one thing i can say is improvement should be fairly easy

My Results:

Switch Kicks: 50×2: 100
Power Jacks: 42
Power Knees: 69
Power Jumps: 18
Globe Jumps: 6 1/2
Suicide Jumps (burpees): 11
Push-Up Jacks: 23
Low Plank Oblique: 18×2: 36

i’ve mentioned before, that i can’t workout in my own living room… and that still holds true, so i’ve decided to utilize the fitness center for my Insanity workouts. the plan is to get up early and ‘Dig Deep’ – head over to the fitness center and get the workout in. I took the measurements and photos this morning (i’ll spare you with those details at this point). the nutritional changes will be tough to follow, but we’ll do our best. and we’ll track progress as we move forward. Fit test again in two weeks…

Insanity – day 1: complete!

My Results

1:01, 1:06, 1:10

man, am i out of shape, the first suicide felt okay, but the second and third… i was dying, not fun times had by me. gotta do more of the running stuff to get back into shape (and not the round kind).

then SWoD: 5×3 Power Clean and 3xMax towel pullups – i don’t have access to towels, so i use the straps instead

pClean: 255, 255, 265, 265, 275 (no straps)

Towel Pullups: 5, 4, 5 – superset with last three sets of pCleans, didn’t get enough rest on the 2nd set, methinks.
